Were you taken by surprise?  Does George use foreshadowing effectively?  What did you think of the pacing and tone?

Christine

I do not want to give away any details, but yes, I was surprised. I love mysteries that you think you are figuring out as you go along but then have a twist, and Elizabeth George delivered in this one.

I thought it was interesting how this scandal seems to be somewhat dated (it seems like politicians other prominent figures having illigitimate children does not immediately cause a stir as much as it may have years ago). It's all how it's spinned -- John Edwards may have used campaign funds and cheated on his beloved wife who had terminal cancer versus teen mom Bristol Palin. Yet in George's book, written a decade ago, it wasn't so much about spin as total containment of the secret.

Ms. George had me fooled completely until the last moment--and what a thrill that was! Her use of foreshadowing kept my stomach in knots, and I thought her pacing matched the action. Altogether a very good read.
